Zurich Classic
Anyways, my last post was after the first day at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans which had American Billy Horschel winning with a four day total of 20-under and shot a 8-under 64 on Sunday to win outright.
Horshel was clicking on Sunday in New Orleans, he made 6 consecutive birdie putts on holes 7 through 12 and had 17 greens in regulation which is pretty incredible.
After a 52 minute rain delay Billy would win in dramatic fashion sinking a 27-foot birdie putt on the par 5 18th to beat D.A. Points by 1 stroke. Horschels' reaction was as intense as it gets with about 8 solid fist pumps and quite a bit of screaming, and grinning ear-to-ear, you could tell he was pretty pumped about winning, but hey, after three straight top tens on tour, who wouldn't be excited about their FIRST PGA Tour victory?!
He later went on to say, "I know it was pretty intense, there was a lot going on. It's celebration time now."
The win at the Zurich Classic moved Billy into 3rd place in the FedEx Cup standings.

Disappointing week for Utah boy Daniel Summerhays who missed the cut by shooting 4-over on Thursday and 1-under on Friday and finishing with 3-over through 2 days.
Wells Fargo Championship
My boy Daniel Summerhays was tied for the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship with a 5-under 67 with Rory McIlroy, Nick Watney and 4 other players. He wouldn't have much luck the rest of the week, he'd shoot 1-over 73 on Friday, and a 3-over 75 on Saturday and Sunday.
But the big name of the week is Derek Ernst a 22-year old rookie out of UNLV while on his way to Athens, Georgia for a web.com tournament got a call a few days before that he had a tee time at the Wells Fargo Championship as the 4th alternate. Crazy, huh?! Just wait, it gets better.
On the 18th hole Ernst was down 1-stroke and needed a birdie to tie the leader David Lynn. From 192 yards out, he choked up on a 6-iron and stuffed it, putting it 4 feet from the hole for one of only four birdies on the closing hole on Sunday. In the playoff with Lynn, he proved that the birdie earlier, yeah that was no fluke, he hit a 3-iron to about 15 feet and sunk the putt for the victory. The win guarantees him a spot in THE PLAYERS Championship this week, qualified for two World Golf Championships, the PGA Championship, next years Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, and The Masters next April. Oh, and to top it all off, he got a pretty hefty paycheck of $1.2 million. No big deal.
This feeling is unbelievable right now," said Ernst. And unbelievable it was.
Phil Mickelson choked on Sunday, my oh my, did he CHOKE! Phil led by 1-stroke with three holes to go and he made back-to-back bogie's, missing putts from 6-feet and 10-feet -he's supposedly the "best" short-game player and putter in the game today (he's lost that title in my opinion). He would finish with a 73 and take 3rd.
"I felt like I was in control, and I let it slip away there the last few holes, so it was disappointing," Mickelson said.
But in all honesty the conditions at Quail Hollow were AWFUL! players were dropping out of the tournament because the greens were in such bad condition, it was freezing all week, it was cloudy, windy, and just everything that you don't want to deal with while golfing. Kudos! to the players that hung in there all week!

THE PLAYERS Championship
This weeks tournament is THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Florida is always a great tournament to watch, but tons of rain last week actually flooded the path to get to the green on the iconic 137 yard par-3 17th island hole.

The rain has gone away and the grounds crew got all the water cleared off and the course is ready to go for the tournament!

Nice update and use of graphics! You probably want to put a semi-color or dash between "Blog for show" and "Putt for dough". Clever title, though.

ReplyDeleteI am going to be honest right now, I know nothing about golf but I do know that I love driving around the little carts! I actually would like to learn again because I used to go with my dad when I was little and had a pretty good time.
